Recent Fitness Activity: Geocaching
I wanted to start a new type of blog...kind of like my "Recent Fitness Activities" blog that I posted last month. That is exactly what these will be! Instead of just blogging about how my jogging is doing (I'll continue to update that on my monthly fitness update) and workouts, I wanted to start getting my family involved in fun activities on the weekends that would help us all get more steps in and a little bit more exercise than usual. When I was younger, my mom would take me and my younger siblings Geocaching. If you don't know what geocaching is, it is kind of like a treasure hunt.
On their website ( https://www.geocaching.com/play ) you can make an account, search your local zip code, and it will then show you how many are in your area. You can make your own caches and hide them for others to find. When I was younger the ones we usually found were boxes that had toys in them hidden in trees, in hidden places on the ground in parks, etc. Some of them are a lot smaller and just have a little piece of paper that you "log" (your name and date) on. It really is a fun activity to do and we had fun trying to find them.
First, I looked up our zip code and picked which ones we wanted to find. A user with the name j2fixer had hidden several caches and had named a lot of them after the looney toon characters. I thought that was a really cute idea for kids, so we went with some of those. We went for a couple of hours (until dinner time because we knew the kiddos would be getting hungry by then) and decided to try to fit in 5 different cache searches for the day. This user hides their caches in a small lab tube form with just a log. I feel like with the locations we had the boys didn't really have a chance to look. I definitely want to look into more park and/or kid friendly ones!
Getting started after creating an account is easy. Like I mentioned, put in your zip code and pick out the ones you want to do. From there you can link each cache location in your GPS. I won't be giving away the locations of these. I do have pictures of the ones we found, but I tried to not let them give too much away. I will link each one though so if you're local you can have a go at it!
Our first stop was for Wile E. Coyote: https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC4K7JG_wile-e-coyote
As soon as we pulled into the location of this one, I noticed something was off about a certain object. Sure enough it was there. Tips on this one is to lift and watch out for spiders!!
Our second stop was for Daffy Duck: https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC4K05J_daffy-duck
We were a little confused on the location for this one because there is a lot going on. We still found this one, though!
Tips: If you find Wile E. Coyote first you'll have a better chance at finding this one.
Our third stop was for Tasmanian Devil: https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC4K8YF_tasmanian-devil
I have no tips on this one. Sadly, he was not found on this day. We spent the most time at this one and it is either no longer there or we just couldn't find it! This location is a little rough and really it could have been anywhere there. We left this location only with chiggers. š«
Our fourth stop was for Marvin the Martian: https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC4K01N_marvin-the-martian
This location was a little tricky due to an awful fire this business had recently. It's driveways were taped off and we didn't want to pass through the tape. Luckily we didn't have to! This one was a really good hiding spot!
Tips: This one was the only one on the website with a "hint" (three trees) which is a good hint, but not every cache is going to be in obvious spots. Don't get caught up in that hint.
Our fifth and final stop was for Elmer Fudd: https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC4K00R_elmer-fudd
Sadly, we didn't find Elmer either. This location was tricky and there was so many spots he could have been. I feel like this was the one we didn't have a lot of time to look for since the boys were starting to get fussy and we called it a day. I would say 3/5 caches is pretty good though! especially with it being our first time going together.
Some pictures of our cache finds. I didn't include where each picture was taken because I want anyone local to have a fair shot at finding them!
Let me know if you find these and if you have any favorite cache spots!
