Salem's Lot by Stephen King
☠ ☠ ☠ ☠ ☠
Another classic from Stephen King. I find myself loving his work but never enjoying the characters but the development with them in this book was great. I actually liked some of them which made the twists a lot crazier for me. It was the perfect choice for Halloween for a spooky horror with vampires.
The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda
☠ ☠ ☠ ☠
The Last House Guest has late 2000's/early 2010's PG-13 horror movie vibes. You have a group of teenagers at a party and one of them goes missing only to be found the same night and thrown over a rock cliff to her death. This unsolved mystery continues to haunt them going into future years. It's a twist on clue trying to figure out who did it. I appreciated the flashback moments leading up to the death and the crime-solving on the case. It was a great cozy mystery!
Such A Quiet Place by Megan Miranda
☠ ☠ ☠ ☠
If Desperate Housewives was a cozy mystery. You have the lane (much like Wisteria Lane) full of nosy neighbors all adding unique elements with different personalities. A double murder occurs and a neighbor is accused but later acquitted of said murder. What does she do, you might be wondering? Moves back to the lane. Is she the actual murderer or is it someone else on the lane? It has suspense throughout, and twists and I loved the drama factor with all the neighbors. While the ending wasn't everything it could've been the rest of the book is worth the read. The best from Megan Miranda so far!
Hide by Kiersten White
☠ ☠ ☠ ☠ ☠
Unpopular opinion (as I have found at least) here - I loved this book. While some may gripe that this book could have done without the sci-fi and just stay horror in a slasher way, I have to say that would have made this book great too and I like the idea, but I still went on a ride with this book that was thrilling, suspenseful, and so entertaining! You have competitors for a 7-day hide-n-seek tournament in an abandoned amusement park. What could go wrong? I enjoyed the horror/sci-fi elements in this making it feel like an urban legend. I also loved the history we got that also helped clue you in while wrapping up the story. The characters were so interesting and fun to read about them competing. While I agree other concepts would have been great too - I found this one to still be an awesome read and an amazing debut adult from Kiersten White.
Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey
☠ ☠ ☠ ☠
What a wild ride with this one. I've heard things about Sarah Gailey but this was my first from them. While I did truly enjoy this creepy book - I also found it a little overwhelming in places. You have these current and past aspects. They sometimes switch quickly which is why sometimes you get confused and realize it's because you're reading something from the character's past. While I wasn't a fan of the characters they were so strange and eerie that I stayed intrigued. There are like 3 huge elements going on in the story. You have the horror of a haunted house, a horror with a serial killer, and a horror sci-fi within. They were all fun (and quite creepy/scary at times) to read about but I think they could have done with maybe a little less plot. This could have been broken into two completely separate books honestly. Though, the twists and overall jarring story kept the pages turning for me.
