Dino Dig // Sensory/Activity Bin
Dino Dig // Sensory/Activity Bin
I posted about my son Axel's 3rd birthday party which featured his dinosaur bone dirt cake and the reason I mention those (and link them!) is because today's blog is all about dinosaurs plus an activity where those amazon figurines come in handy. Those figurines are linked, but if you haven't checked out the cake blog or even birthday blog and/or don't plan to... I used them to form molds with brown sugar and then poured white chocolate almond bark in them to form edible dinosaurs! It's a really cute idea for any kid who loves dinosaurs like my little Axe. After that I was left with all these bone dinosaurs (plus his billion other dino toys) so I wanted to come up with a fun activity where I could use them!
In our house, we LOVE activity/sensory bins. I plan to feature more, but this is the first-ever that I have mentioned here on my blog. They're (for the most part) super easy to make, great learning experiences, and the kids love them!
Besides those amazing benefits of these bins, there is also the fact that these bins are then cleaned up, placed away in the closet, and not a mess around my house until the next time it is in use.
I chose Dino Dig first because for one I had the figurines already, but also because this one is super easy to put together!
You, of course, need a tub (tote, box, container, etc.) to use to hold the contents. You then need to have a "soil" and while some sand or something of that sort would work just fine... My boys already have a sand bin so I wanted to go another direction with this. I chose black beans. They are messy don't get me wrong but at the same time, they honestly weren't too bad of a cleanup process. Just keep in mind if you have a 3-year-old like myself more than likely they might just chuck a handful of beans across the floor. Ha!
When it comes to the beans it's simple but plan for the size of container/tub you have ready for the idea. I used a 12 Qt. storage tote that has a lid in case it tips... It won't go everywhere!
I got a couple bags of beans from Aldi when I ordered groceries but once they got here I realized they were rather small bags so I called my husband and he ran by Walmart on the way home and found the bigger bags there. In this bin, I did end up using both small bags and both big bags.
Once again I will mention the dinosaur figurines, but keep in mind that any will do. These are rather cheap and a bonus since they're actual skeleton figures. You can use any dino figures you have or can easily grab some at a dollar store too! I threw in a couple shovel-like toys from their sand bin to "help" them dig the dinos out too.
You can make this a learning experience by talking about the different dinosaurs but also by reading some books all about dinosaurs!
Roman our oldest wasn't feeling well this night to play so I unfortunately only got photos of Axe with it, but Roman finally came around later and I was able to record a little with him. You can see that and the other parts putting this bin together in my video: Dino Dig
They LOVED it!
