Read in 2020 // Part 1
Read in 2020 // Part 1
I promised myself that this year of 2020 would consist of much-needed reading sessions. It started that way and it has progressed into a rather slow pace. I want this year to be full of books, but I'm not setting a number because with my already crazy schedule of everything else I do I want to make sure I have the time to enjoy reading instead of feeling pressured to get through books. I am keeping in mind that I would like to read 2-5 books a month. Depending on how busy a month is maybe the next will be even better. I finished only two in January so I wasn't doing too hot, but have only finished one so far in February I guess it was better than that! haha. Two books is still more a month than last year in general so I will take it. I will keep my reviews vague and non-spoiling if you choose to read. Please feel free to leave book recommendations below or even on my personal IG (@allisonhunt_2) under any of my posts of books!
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
This part is going to be focused on the books I grabbed at the library when we took the boys. I came across this book and realized I never read it. Back in 2011, I believe is when the movie came out and I told myself I would read the book first before the movie. Though I never broke that I still have only just read this book and right after watched the movie as well. I loved the history of the circus in this book and that is what kept the pages turning for most of the book. I found myself not getting invested in any of the characters. Well besides Rosie (the elephant if you haven't read) of course. I can say I have read some "really slow getting into the story" books in the past and as this one was like so in places I found that it also would bring me right back to where I had to know what would come next. For the most part, I enjoyed the way this book was written and it definitely is explained well enough to paint a picture for each scene. I think my only downfall was not falling in love with the people's characters. I usually have to form some kind of liking to someone to fully enjoy and get into the story. This is the first time I can't figure out if I like the book or movie better, but it could be my love for Reese Witherspoon. Haha.

A Study In Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro
Next came this book that I actually stumbled across by the teen section. The bright colors made me think it was another book I was looking for, but since I like mysteries I thought why not try it? I am after all trying new authors this year. I did think of it as a book I would've liked in my teen years and maybe that is why I'm not being able to stick with it. I sadly found this book a little slow too during each chapter until the very end of each chapter, which in the end I sort of liked because it became more of the style of writing. Then like I mentioned in the previous book, I couldn't fall for any of the characters. I like the dark and twisted edge, but still felt it needed more. It was good enough to finish, but I'm left unsure if I want to finish the series.

Two By Two by Nicholas Sparks
I don't think Nicholas Sparks can do wrong in my eyes. I just LOVE his writing. This one was a lot more to get through than his others for me. I think it is a good read for anyone in a marriage, getting out of a marriage, or thinking of marriage even. Marriages are hard and it was nice seeing the struggle of relationships in this book instead of just a perfect couple. It was hard to get through for most, but it did cause me to continue to feel blessed about the spouse I have and when it comes down to it I know in my heart our kids will always come first. It breaks my heart that that isn't always the case. Although it will pull at your heartstrings I think I really needed this book and I'm happy I read it. Now the downside is I feel like parts started getting slower like the previous two. The difference is this book is so much longer so I would've been happier with a few shorter chapters to get to the point, but I know from his other books he likes them to be longer so you really get a feel for each character which in the end makes me like more of the characters so in a way that works! I still wish he would've lessened the first chapters and made more to the ending than what it ended up being.
