Here We Go Again | Garden 2020 Pt. 1

Here We Go Again | Garden 2020 Pt. 1

I did such a shitty job keeping up with garden blogs last year so I hope to be better about it this year, but I'm not starting off on a high note.. Haha.
So pretty much a month ago I ordered from Ferry-Morse. I had never heard of this website and I had never ordered seeds online before. I took a chance with it to avoid getting out during a pandemic, which may have been a mistake. It took a minute for them to come in and I had hoped to have my seeds planted way earlier than I did.

So moving forward with this I decided to use these little "greenhouses" with the soil pods (if that's what they're called. Ha.) and this was also a first for me. Honestly, this whole process has been new for me this year and I wish I had taken baby steps than doing so many new things all at once. I did find these soil pods to be super handy and such an easy way to start if you go with seeds. You're able to keep them in the house which means you can start your planting a lot earlier and not have to base it on the weather. The instructions are there, but pretty much you add water to dried soil pods and they expand. You can see the difference in that last photo above. The pods on the left I had just added water to and were starting to expand while the right side had expanded from water already.
You pull the netting back some, make a hole, and put your seeds in like you would plant them outside. I didn't add anymore water because they were so wet already and I didn't want to over water from the get-go.

Between ordering seeds online, building my own raised garden beds (blog is already up on those!), using these little pods with the greenhouse set up, and pretty much growing everything from seeds instead of starter plants has been a journey in itself. Last year, I couldn't find zucchini or okra starters anywhere local so I bought seeds, planted them in little starter cups I had from other plants, and they grew fast and were amazing plants. I got a big head with that and thought this was going to be my year of all seeds! What is different is that I grew those seeds late May or June last year instead of in the beginning. They were able to grow from outside without extra care and the seeds did amazing. This year starting from the beginning with awful weather has been a challenge. It went from being really nice outside, to freezing, to awful storms with downpour of rain, and crazy wind. The seeds in their pods were kept inside at all times and although I tried to follow the instructions... Some seeds just wouldn't start.

After being so frustrated I decided to move all plants that had started to sprout together in one and the others that didn't together in one as well. I tried some of the same seeds again and/or added new ones in the soil pods in hope of some luck with it. It's been a struggle to say the least. Some of the previous duds have started to sprout thankfully, but others I'm still fighting for. I wanted my first blog to be inspiring to others who may be starting their gardens right now, but unfortunately it has been a struggle. I still wanted to share what I'm planting this year and just kick start the garden blogs that will continue to come when there is progress!
Gardening isn't always easy, but I'm wishing all you other green thumbs out there the best with your gardens this year! XO
