Recent Reads | 2022

My first official recent reads of 2022 and I actually set a goal of 35 books this year. It may not seem like a lot to the average reader but I wanted a realistic goal with the little amount I read last year.

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

☠ ☠

I found this story hard to get into. I based it on the characters but then realized it could be the fact that I chose this book to start the new year with… it’s a roller coaster of emotions especially if you have seen a loved one go through cancer. Some references would take me back and I found myself sitting the book down several times.

I still wish there was more to the characters... I feel I left the finished book still not knowing much about them besides their diagnosis.

It does give you a look into what that journey looks like for different people. Being the actual person or caregiver. Also, the unexpected story plots helped make it more than just a sad story. I did find myself zooming through the last pages ready to wrap it up in a good or bad way I couldn’t tell you. I have mixed feelings and numbness from completing this read.

The Six: Kristy by Samantha March

☠ ☠ ☠

While I do find Samantha March's writing relatable and even enjoyable. I feel like this read doesn't level up to others due to the "chick-lit" vibe. Don't get me wrong, I know that is her vibe and the story is on point for it. The skull (star) ratings are my own personal opinion of the type of books I read. If you only read this type I'm sure the rating would be higher for you. It's just hard for me to compare it. Although, my life is nothing like the characters introduced so far I love how you fall into it feeling you're there and "one of the girls." It's easy to follow and fairly easy to stay with the story. I find a lot of the time it's hard to keep up with the characters in series like this but she makes it easy to. I love the details given and that we get to know the main character well while learning pieces here and there about the girls that will have their own book in the series soon. I wish there was more to the ending and that what was built up throughout the story played out but maybe we'll have that in the future books. While this isn't my go-to genre in books I find myself wanting to know more and wanting to continue the series. She kept me intrigued and I look forward to the rest of the series.

Toyko Ghoul Vol. 1 by Sui Ishida

☠ ☠ ☠ ☠ ☠

My current manga addiction. I love manga that has action and darker themes. This one is spot on but includes twists and questions. I like the modern feel of it while it has sparked nostalgia like I'm reading a past loved manga again. I'm enjoying the characters, but do hope to have more insight into their lives and personalities in the following volumes. It's a new day and age take on dark beings much like vampires which is why I probably enjoy it so much.

The Six: Scarlett by Samantha March

☠ ☠ ☠

I knew what to expect more going into the second book of this series. I found the writing to be similar and enjoyable. What this one lacked for me was the main character. I found I couldn't relate to her. It was a weird feeling because I obviously felt for her and took her side but I still couldn't grasp if I enjoyed her story. In the first book, I didn't enjoy the ending. It's not necessarily a cliffhanger feeling but more like the book isn't finished yet. I realized that is how this series is wrapped up in each book to move straight to the next girl without losing much time (as in days) before the story picks up again. The same story flows into the next with different perspectives and new information. It is very much so that same "chick-lit" vibe but she has kept me wanting to know what happens to these girls. My only wish is that I could've known more of what happened with Kristy (from book 1) from Kristy's perspective. I feel like that is going to be a repeated feeling jumping into the next.

Feeding The Soul by Tabitha Brown

☠ ☠ ☠

This book was my savory pick of the month. I read a lot this month but saved this one to have a piece of it each day. It’s inspiring, motivating, and all-around empowers you to be a better you! I found myself taking notes from Tab of reminders I need to give myself more day-to-day. She encourages living life authentically and being yourself with one of my favorite quotes from it is “Don’t let fear keep you bound to an identity that was never yours.” It was a great read for the new year to get into an inspired and empowered mindset. I also loved the added vegan recipes she includes throughout this book. I made a couple of them and they were delish!
