Recent Reads Part 8 | 2022

Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn
☠ ☠ ☠ ☠ ☠

What a fun read! The summary reeled me in already with retired female assassins that are now being targeted and trying to escape their own deaths. This story goes from past and present perspectives. I loved how the story would collide together from chapter to chapter especially on past to present parts that went together so well while mentioning some of the events that happened then to now happen again in the present. The characters themselves are entertaining and likable already but add in their more mature age and you have those comedy moments that never missed a beat. The plot, twists, turns, and everything was just so enjoyable I couldn't put it down.

Witch Please by Ann Aguirre
☠ ☠

A witchy romcom with all the drama of a witch falling in love with a nonwitch which your family is against. Plus, he swears his love life is cursed.

What went wrong with this read was the potential it could’ve had if the plot was heavier throughout and didn’t revolve around this miscommunication and secrets three-quarters of the way in. There were other minor cringes I had with the characters but they were actually likable. I just wished the story moved a little faster. If you like modern romcoms and witchy reads you may like this one for the spooky season.

The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

☠ ☠

Another witchy romcom that seems to always have the same elements of the witches owning a shop in a little magical town and the love interest being forbidden. What I did like about this read was the fact there was an actual plot working its way through the entire book and not just a lingering romantic fling with nothing else going on. The plot kept me interested but the characters really threw me. While I'm not against the past lovers to exes now ending up in the same place again "trope," it was never a super favorite of mine, but this one was just odd. The miscommunication drove me nuts since they really didn't have anything keeping each other from each other like most of these types of stories.

The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix
☠ ☠ ☠ ☠

This read caught me by surprise because it really has all the elements I would love in a slasher/horror book. All The nostalgic references to old slashers to today's writing of past/current "final girls." All of those concepts, the writing style, tidbits of interviews/newspaper clippings in between chapters, and the plot, in general, were a great read. What I did have a hard time with was liking most of the characters. Who knows how these people are going to cope or what type of people they actually become after something so tragic but it still felt off to me. I felt the character development could have been improved in some areas or I just wanted more. Either way, it was still a read I really enjoyed!

A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson
☠ ☠ ☠ ☠

This read was a little different for me but nonetheless, I really fell for it when I didn't think I would. The historical factors and intriguing character dynamics really drew me in. I also love a good vampire read. This telling of multiple loves had me feeling in many ways. I really rooted for most of the characters and where their stories would end. The storytelling and going through decades with such beautifully described places had me turning the pages. By the end, I couldn't put it down, and wow what an ending.
