Our Garden // 2019
Our Garden // 2019
I grew up around gardens. Rather it was one of my grandpas with their bigger gardens filled with all things or our simple garden in our backyard that mainly consisted of tomatoes. I've always been so fascinated by gardens and watching plants become something especially if you start with the seeds and watch it grow from there. Regardless I always said I would have a garden every summer. Two years ago I had my very first garden of my own and it honestly was a good year. There were learning trials and errors, I lost a few plants, and I also had an amazing neighbor that cared as much for my garden as his own. I will always admire the kindness and advice he shared with me. I blogged my experience with that garden and will have all three blog posts on them below.
Last year was a different story. It was a bad year on my mental health so I just wasn't up for it plus mosquitos were horrid last year.
Since our move, this past year and the time I've had to really work on myself one of the things I promised myself I would get back into is gardening so I started my second.
This one has definitely been a journey and I've just wanted to throw in the towel honestly. I want to start this blog off on a more positive approach because in the beginning this garden was beautiful and that is what I'm sharing today. Oh but don't worry those trials and errors I went through this year will be coming in a blog soon!
This year I was so excited (maybe a little too excited) that I went a little ham on plants. I chose so many and not to mention how many of each one. My rows started with cherry, grape, and Roma tomatoes, to big beef tomatoes, bell peppers galore, jalapenos, zucchini, squash, more zucchini (not kidding), eggplant, celery, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, cucumbers, herbs, and okra!
There was too much going on especially for only ever having one garden on my own and taking a whole summer break in between. You live and you learn. Next years will be much different and I will, of course, take you along the way when it comes. I am playing a little catch up here since I was taking a break from my blog at this actual time, but day one of this years garden was April 22nd.
Everything came as starter plants, besides my okra and zucchini that I wasn't able to find locally. Those I planted from seed and was shocked with the amazing results of them (you'll see the progress in my next garden blog) in two weeks time!
We lacked a tiller this year so it was hand tilled which was a nightmare itself... It will definitely be machine tilled next year. Ha! From there I started planting and realized just have exhausting it could be planting so many! Gardening isn't for the weak, but relax and take your time. There is something so therapeutic about it in return. It took some time getting everything into the ground and then waiting another two weeks for the okra and zucchini to sprout to place them in the ground as well.
One month in and everything was flourishing and doing absolutely amazing! If you don't follow my Vlog channel I posted 1 Month of Our Garden that you should check out to see more up close and personal how the plants were doing during the first month. If the garden didn't scream springtime to me already the momma bird feeding her chirping babies sure did! I also took a break in between gardening for picking wild violets with my sons for violet jelly which I'll save for another blog.
I can leave this blog feeling accomplished because nothing had died at this point...yet. Ha!
