Burlap Turkey Suckers | How-To
Burlap Turkey Suckers | How-To
You may be thinking "It's December...Why is this woman still stuck on fall things?" Behind the scenes I can assure you I am in full Christmas mode with my 25 Days of Vlogmas! The reason for this blog struck me in one of my last blogs, Fall 2020, when I mentioned these cute little turkeys that I did last minute for Roman's class party.
Roman's teacher had sent out a list of supplies they needed still for a 'Charlie Brown Thanksgiving' and while I normally try to supply as much as I can... Every parent had beat me to what they needed. So I was left to figure out a last minute idea for Roman to take for his class party. It was a late, go to bed at 4am type of night as I put these turkeys together. All these took for me was a last minute trip that my hubby made for the suckers. The crafter that I am had the rest to work with, but it's super easy so if you don't have the things.. That's okay, it's not a lot. It's also self explanatory, I know, but they were too cute not to share and to have saved for myself for future Thanksgiving parties!
What You Need:
- Suckers - I used Tootsie Roll Pops, but Blow Pops or bigger suckers in general work too
- Burlap - I usually have burlap rolls on hand for different crafts which worked great for this project cutting out little squares that at least cover the whole sucker top
- Feathers - easy find at a craft store
- Felt - felt sheets are so handy to have for kid crafts! I buy variety packs so I had every color needed on hand
- Googly eyes - another easy craft store find
- Twine - You want this to be the light string like twine that makes it easier to tie and secure the burlap
- Glue gun & glue sticks
How-To:
- After cutting out the burlap in squares that measure over your suckers (I found it easiest to measure and cut out one. Then use that one to measure and cut out the rest. It makes the process faster especially if you're making them for a whole party and/or class like myself.) tie and secure burlap over the sucker with twine.
- I cut little rectangles of brown felt and glued feathers across it. I had to cut my feathers down some with scissors so they wouldn't stick down too far or be too tall. Just use your best judgement on how they look. Then I added more glue over the felt and feathers to wrap it around the "body" of the turkey. I'm sure there is a cuter way to do so, but for last minute this was a great way to secure the feathers in place.
- Cut out red felt gobbles (if that's what they're called) and orange beaks. Then hot glue the entire face on. Googly eyes, gobble, & beak. I placed the beak over the gobble to hide the top of it.
There you have it! Aren't they so cute?! Also, kid approved! He was so happy and proud to take his turkeys to school. They were a hit and his teacher sent the photo below since I had to miss out due to Covid 19. That smile made it a lot better. It also made the exhausting day of going to bed at 4am a lot better too. Ha!
