Hand Painted Wood Cuts | Ornament Making
Hand Painted Wood Cuts | Ornament Making
I've been known to take on a lot creatively and right now that is Vlogmas. I'm sucked in and committed to 25 days of it! That being said one of the adventures of vlogmas I took on is ornament making. I did a couple different types so I will be splitting it up into different blogs. Today I want to focus on just the wooden hand painted ones that are now some of my favorites! Other ornament blogs will come throughout this month so stay tuned to my blog. You can also see the ornament making in action in todays vlogmas video.
I got the idea after seeing different hand painted ornaments and thought it was the perfect idea for the new themes my boys chose for their trees this year. Plus our shop Hunt's DIY Decor has wood burn ornaments that we sell every year like the ones above so I had some extras from the bulk laying around to paint with. Any wood cut ornaments work as long as you make sure they're a decent size so you have plenty of room to sketch out your idea and then paint it too.
Besides the wood cut ornaments all you need is a variety of paints, string to hang them (this usually comes with the wood ornaments we order), a pencil for sketching, paint brushes, glitter & glue is optional, and I also had two pretty cute helpers.
The time it took to get them to the table, put on aprons, and get the brushes and paint to them was the same amount of time they participated. Ha! They helped with the base shades and were gone. With my afternoon coffee and Christmas music playing I got to work.
While the paint dried on the base coats I worked on the other ornaments before coming back to sketch up my ideas. Roman's theme is snowmen and Axels is The Grinch. For Roman we went with a pale blue and white. With Axels I got to play it up with bright green and red. I decided on 5 each. My thought was to do two detailed ones, two of the same simple designs, and a quote each.
For the Grinch ornaments I decided to try my hand at the Grinch face, but kept the other detailed one simple with a red heart on a green ornament. Roman's detailed ones were both snowmen. One was a close up and one has more details that looks like a full scene. For my last two for each set I decided on snowflakes and peppermints. Lastly, for the sketches my husband came to the rescue of my bad handwriting and wrote out "Let It Snow" on one of Romans and "He's a Mean One" on one of Axels.
I love painting so it was pretty therapeutic in a way. The rest is pretty self explanatory. I just painted along the lines I sketched with the right color themes. The only run in I had was not having a yellow for the grinch eyes so I mixed a little orange with white and it dried down to a perfect shade! I also broke out the glitter and glue. I added red glitter to the grinch heart and white glitter to the snow on one of the snowmen ornaments. They turned out so good and I enjoyed it so much that I might just have to post these in our shop for orders come next Christmas time. If you're reading in the future around Christmas and would rather order than make you way want to check with that link above.
I'm not an artist when it comes to drawing so I was super happy with how these came out!
