Elf On The Shelf 2021

I know the feeling of moving the damn elf every night all too well. Don’t get me wrong... I think this is such a cute tradition and we do get creative with it, but this is one of the most tiring times of the year and the last thing you want is another thing to do after putting the kids to bed. I also have to say it is another thing you really have to plan ahead for too. It’s a lot of work, okay? If you have started this tradition then you know what I mean. There are only a few days left of this tradition, but I usually share some we do each year to show, maybe help others with ideas, and to remind you to breathe if you forget the damn elf. It happens!

We always start with a short and sweet letter to the boys. It starts each year plus we know what is happening each first day ahead of time. We also never need anything for that day. Just the elf and the book under the tree that goes with him. Either way, the boys are just excited to see him back at it!

Sure we do splurge a little on some days. From an inflatable airplane to him bringing “v-bucks” for Fortnite. But in between, there are plenty of “cheat” days. I’m one person who can’t do elaborate things daily. I just don’t have it in me especially when I’m having a hard time around the holidays. So just move him. If you have different areas decorated around your house move it around them on those in-between days when you need a break or just need something easy. Part of the fun is finding him each day! I get bonus points when the boys laugh because he’s upside down or hidden well. I literally put him outside this year on decor on the porch. It was a good surprise. If you have several trees, like me, move him from tree to tree on off days.

If you want or can get more creative with it our Buddy pancakes never disappoint and I try to find ways the boys can hold our elf every year. Sometimes it’s being in a mason jar (good quarantine idea too) and this year Buddy was in a balloon! The boys also always love when Buddy is incorporated with their own toys. I've done this many times. This year, Buddy saved the day for Mario and Luigi.

We’re finishing out the year with little gift surprises, finishing out the advent calendar (which was a hit. This ‘Elf on the Shelf’ branded one came in four separate boxes for four different days spread out), and our last is always new comfy pj’s on Christmas Eve by our pile of Christmas books. Another letter will come Christmas morning even though they are normally busy with presents.

It’s an extra thing but helps make each holiday season even more magical and special for our kiddos. What’s your favorite ‘Elf on the Shelf’ idea you’ve done?
