Carrie by Stephen King

☠ ☠ ☠ ☠

A classic - Carrie is the horror story of coming of age. It's frightening, shows the effect of bullying, and how cruel life/people can be. Carrie is coming of age and has her first period - while having a mother who doesn't approve of her daughter growing up so Carrie is sheltered and has no idea what is going on. It's very relatable for girls who grew up with a mother who shielded them from any talk of body changes and the reproduction system to "keep their child from having sex." Of course, the exaggerated story of intense religion and telekinesis mind powers. I love the horror twist and build-up that leads to the "finale." Another great chilling read from Stephen King.

The Six: Lauren by Samantha March

☠ ☠ ☠

Another installment to 'The Six' series by Samantha March. I mentioned being invested in these girls' lives and she didn't disappoint with this one. This has probably been the best of the series so far for me. This series is focused on 6 girl-friends figuring out life through their twenties, getting careers going, and making bucket lists items come true before they are 30. It's chick lit with drama, girl talk, and relatable personalities. I found Lauren to be very likable and while her situation isn't ideal - she shows strength in doing the best for herself even when it may let others down. I enjoyed seeing a character that lives for herself and is content with that. This isn't the rom-com of a girl falling for a guy and dropping everything in her current life for him. I appreciated that. This series still isn't my go-to in terms of genre, but I'm easing up more to the characters and enjoy the read.

Vicious by V.E. Schwab

☠ ☠ ☠ ☠

I heavily enjoyed my last read by V.E. Schwab and couldn't wait to pick up another by her. I heard this series was a good one and I am so glad I came across it. It has a slight sci-fi hint to it with the talk of EOs (ExtraOrdinaries) while giving me suspense and a thriller. This is the first book in so long where I fell for the characters pretty fast. Even the characters I feel I'm not supposed to like - I do. I notice a huge writing difference between this and 'The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue' but I'm not mad about it. Her writing style in this is still appealing and reels you in. In this book we meet the main characters and get introduced more to the life of EOs and if they exist. Can they be created? I also found myself excited wanting to know each of the unique powers they would have. The story itself is also dark and grungy with characters that are a little rough around the edges. I'm excited to pick up the next and look forward to more character development with this crew. I'm also stoked to find out there are graphic novels in this series as well!

One Piece Vol. 2 by Eiichiro Oda

☠ ☠ ☠ ☠

Another tale from One Piece the pirate manga that I'm loving. It is the first adventure manga that I have tried that has comedy aspects and intriguing characters. We meet Buggy the clown pirate in this volume and learn that he too has powers from the forbidden fruit. While I feel not too much happens in each volume so far there is still always a big battle scene that is fun and long. I like how light the mood is with it and overall the fun read it truly is.

Blindsighted by Karin Slaughter

☠ ☠ ☠ ☠

I tried my first Karin Slaughter book - I went with the Grant County series unintentionally as it's just her first series. Although I was warned about her writing I found out quickly how graphic her storytelling really is. This is a true crime series (her books fall in the true crime/detective section) that is based on a small town/county in Georgia. We follow the small-town pediatrician who also works as the county coroner. Her ex-husband is the Chief of police but there is this love tension that lingers with them - and since they have to work together you can only imagine how things are going to go. The case follows a string of attacks on women (warning - violence and sexual abuse are both present in the case/this book) that are both brutal and shocking. The small town duo is stunned to have this type of crime in the small area. The twist and turns were great in this book and for my first from Karin Slaughter, I really enjoyed it. I do wish the characters were a little more likable but I can say they are spot on for small-town people. I hope character development comes in the second book so that the series is more enjoyable.
