RECENT READS PART 4 | 2022

 Final Girls by Riley Sager

☠ ☠ ☠ ☠

What a wild ride of a book! This is my first ever read from Riley Sager and while I did find myself having a hard time adjusting (or trusting) any characters throughout it. It was the perfect story for it. The ‘Final Girls’ are the ones who survive their attack and are known as the “last woman standing” in their cases. This story focuses on their future with flashbacks to the main characters' tragic experiences at Pine Cottage. It’s very horror “cabin in the woods” vibes. My only criticisms have to be craving more horror than it gave and feeling like it could’ve been much more in general. But I’m glad I stayed for the twists and turns.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

☠ ☠ ☠ ☠

This was a book I went into wanting to experience for the first time while I had already seen all the movies of it. Because of that, I held off from this book for so long but also just because I knew it was a YA read. I can say it wasn't as young as I thought it would be while still riding that YA line. I really enjoy Suzanne Collins's writing style and her characters are likable from the get-go. She writes in a way of getting to the point while making you also feel like you're right there in the book. It's easy to get lost in the story. While the movies are pretty good I can say I enjoyed reading them even more. The little details that are easy to miss in a movie jumped right out at me and made me want to rewatch the first movie after finishing this book. I only long for more of the story and maybe a little less YA. But overall it's a read I'm glad I finally got to and I do recommend it if you've thought about reading them but held off. I'm looking forward to the next.

 Kisscut by Karin Slaughter

☠ ☠ ☠

Another read by Karin Slaughter. While I do appreciate her writing style and will to never hold back details. This book of the series was a little challenging to get through. I think it was the fact that while reading this one we had the heaviness of Roe v. Wade being overturned - which this book has a lot of those issues going on. It was a heavy read to get through and almost triggering in a way. I did appreciate the small amount of character development we got with the main characters but I did hope for more. I can say I have already started the third book in the series because I am still wanting more of her writing and I overall want to see where things go with these people.

Along Came A Spider by James Patterson

☠ ☠ ☠ ☠

My first James Patterson read in a long time. Although I read a couple of his in my teens I never fully got invested in any of his series so I wanted to start one now. I chose Alex Cross with starting this book. I fully got the vibe of reading a Law & Order episode with this book. That can be a good or bad thing since it can sometimes be boring and you wish you were just watching it. But I didn't feel that at all with this read. It definitely starts with that vibe and ends with it but the story in the middle is incredible. The writing style keeps the pages turning and I love the back and forth as we get to see a little into the mind of the "killer." I feel I am just getting to know key people from this series but they're all pretty likable from the get-go. The twists turns, and plot in general was so fun and kept me on my toes. I'm excited to continue this beloved series.

 The Bad Beginning by

☠ ☠ ☠ ☠

I wrapped up book one from the Series of Unfortunate Events with my kiddos. I read I few of these books with them when they were super little. It brings back a lot of memories rereading them now with them when they're old enough to comprehend things. It is a dark, twisted story that still offers humor while having some of the best character development in a series. This part introduces the main characters and main story plot that will follow the series through. With each book, a new story unravels while maintaining that original plot. We enjoyed the Baudelaire children and got some good laughs at how clueless most of the adults in this series can be. We can't wait to continue reading this series together.
