Recent Reads Part 9 {Graphic Novels & Manga} | 2022
This book review is all the graphic novels & manga I read towards the end of the year. xx
Fangs by Sarah Andersen
☠ ☠ ☠ ☠ ☠
A graphic novel about a Vampire and Werewolf falling in love. It's a book full of vampire and werewolf jokes/puns that were so cute and honestly refreshing to read. One of the best graphic novels I've picked up. The characters are so perfect and it was the perfect amount of cheesy rom-com to make it iconic. I love the romcom mix with dark humor so much. A definite recommend!
Coraline by Neil Gaiman
☠ ☠ ☠ ☠
A dark child book that has a frightening twist. This is one of the only books that I would say I enjoyed the movie more. I feel Tim Burton turned it up a notch with the creepy but this was still a cute read and such a chilling story. I love the hidden meaning behind specific details while also just feeling like it's a child's book. It has all the right elements for a spooky campfire read to it. Comfy, cozy, and creepy.
Vampire Knight Vol 1, 2, & 3 by Matsuri Hino
☠ ☠ ☠ ☠ ☠
A nostalgic binge-read for me. I loved Vampire Knight manga and anime when I was a teen so rereading them now has been a throwback moment for me. I still love the character dynamic and the overall story of a school with a day class and a night class. Dividing the human and vampire worlds while trying to get them to also coexist. Ahhh who doesn't love a vampire read? It's still a cute one.
Blankets by Craig Thompson
☠ ☠ ☠ ☠
A sweet but jarring coming-of-age story that is sure to punch you in the gut a few times. The cover art and title are a little misleading about what you will experience reading this book. While sure there is the romance aspect, I went into this read thinking it was full-on romance but came to be not a cushy romance graphic novel but something insanely vulnerable as a modern coming to age tale that deals with so many tough realities that seem more common and relatable than should be which makes this story heartbreaking. It is well told and the art is absolutely breathtaking. You'll definitely want a blanket, to snuggle in while reading this for comfort, but bring the tissues too.
The Montague Twins: The Witch's Hand by Nathan Page
☠ ☠ ☠ ☠
I was on the hunt for a variety of witchy tales for the spooky season and going into this YA graphic novel I was unsure if it was going to be for me but soon found out I would quite enjoy it. So much so that I look forward to picking up the next one! It has such enjoyable and likable characters with great character development that does a great job bringing topics of sexuality and also depression of people of young age to light in a way that I found to be comforting and just the right approach for a younger audience. This story was packed with mystery, humor, and the right amount of deeper conversations that gave an even bigger purpose to this story besides being very entertaining and spooky. While I see the reach of this book for YA audiences I still really enjoyed it.
The Cryptid Club by Sarah Andersen
☠ ☠ ☠ ☠
This short and sweet graphic novel was just what I needed to refresh how much I love spooky books with humor from Sarah Andersen. Much like 'Fangs,' this one features a bunch of mythical creatures that humanize them into jokes. It is pretty short but such a fun read.
